The term safety is associated with places we are most comfortable with, like our homes. More than half of home injuries were from the age group of 1-2 years. It’s important to re-consider child safety at home.
Our houses have many objects, such as toys, batteries, medicines, furniture, hot and sharp objects. We have to make sure safety measures are in place to avoid injury. To make it easier for you, we have put together a childproofing/ babyproofing checklist.
Children shouldn’t be left alone in water.
Toddler play in the water can be fun and help develop their gross motor skills. Unintended actions may result in harmful consequences, so it’s important to watch them. Even if you need to grab your phone from the other room, do not leave them unattended.
Chemicals and detergents should not be accessible to the public.
It is normal for toddlers to be curious. If detergents have a strong smell, your child may start messing with them. If you store these products in a cabinet or high shelf, you protect your child from accidentally inhaling harmful fumes or consuming them.
You need to childproof your electrical outlets.
Your child may be interested in electrical outlets and switches. The unattended gadgets/ devices connected to the plug points may lead a child to play with them. Babyproofing all electrical outlets should be a priority. They can be covered with electrical guards or sockets. You can teach your toddler about electricity and the dangers of it if they are old enough. All openings in your home should be secured.
Children may not know how doors and windows work. If left unattended, they may get stuck in the door gaps or accidentally open the bedroom window. It is advisable to have secured locks on all windows and doors. Child safety can be improved by installing barriers at the staircase.
Your child's sleeping area should be free of stuff.
Parents fill their children's room with soft toys, pillows, blankets and so on. All blankets and pillows should be tucked in securely to the bed to prevent accidental suffocation. Store toys away from the bed and keep a few for the baby to play with.
Home décor items should be placed out of reach.
It is important to decorate our home with the right wall colors, furniture sets, and carpets. While most of them are baby proofed, some items like glass vases or showcase pieces may be dangerous for your little one. The best way to prevent injuries is to keep these items out of reach. We have a list of eco-friendly home décor ideas that you can try out.
Pet interaction needs to be handled with care.
When it comes to safety at home for children, pet interaction is neglected. Kids and pets are very affectionate towards each other. A kid might not always know how to interact with them. A child may accidentally treat a pet like a toy when they are sleeping or eating. If your child's pet starts making noise or feels uncomfortable, it's a good idea to keep some distance. Don't let your child disturb the pet while they are sleeping or eating.
We want you to be as vigilant as possible to ensure child safety at home. It is not realistic to give up all of your duties to watch your child. From time to time, you should check in. It's a good idea to call your child regularly to check on how they're doing. If you are interested in buying a
